The Parish Refugee Resettlement Ministry was created through the USCCB. Last year Catholic Community Services resettled 570 legal refugees in Utah. The parish Refugee Resettlement ministry is an opportunity for each of us to practice firsthand, for real, the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy we are called to do as Catholics.
Catholic Community Services will refer refugee families to us and we welcome the family and mentor them, helping them adapt to life in the United States. We teach them English, help shop for groceries and clothes, teach them about housekeeping and all the ‘things’ in their homes they have never had before, like fridges and stoves and washing machines, we help them with school and learning the transit system and help the parents and older children find work. It is very rewarding!
Parishioners interested in volunteering should contact the parish refugee resettlement coordinator, Katherine Mahoney, 801-523-6190.
